History of Stando

Stando was built from a simple idea: work should feel good.

The concept of an electronic sit stand desk has come a long way in the past decade. For our director Lewis Back, it began in 2011 while studying at university and spending endless hours sitting at a desk. “I felt sluggish, unfocused, and low on energy. When I discovered the concept of standing desks — already booming overseas — I couldn’t believe there were no quality options available in Australia so, I decided to make one”.

What started as a few imported parts and a homemade prototype quickly grew into Zen Space Desks, one of Australia’s first standing desk brands that built up over 50,000 customers. We pioneered the movement and helped thousands of Australians rethink the way they work. 

After nearly a decade, I wanted to take that idea further — to redefine what custom really means. Not just in the desk itself, but in the entire workspace experience. That vision became Stando. The brand 'Zen' was sold and is not traded in Australia. Reviews on our site reflect a genuine 'what you get' from us and carry over from the Zen days.

Stando is about more than desks. It’s about performance, wellbeing, and personality — creating products that empower you to work better, feel better, and make your space truly yours. While all of these are not yet live on our website, we are working to re develop the space and bring a better experience to the Australian market with Stando.

While we proudly continue to support all Zen Space Desks warranties, Stando is our next chapter: a more refined, bespoke approach with smarter technology, thoughtful design, and a more personal touch.
